New Year’s Resolutions for a Sustainable 2020
Being Sustainable in 2020
New Year, New Resolutions
How can we change our lives for the better?
What resolutions should we make that will actually make a difference? Should we be working towards a more sustainable future?
Sustainable 2020
The news this year has been overflowing with environmental disasters. From climate change to plastic pollution, unsustainable farming, mass extinction, uncontrollable bushfires and loss of biodiversity, it would seem that our planet is at serious risk.
Whilst many of the stories in the media are labelled as fearmongering, there is a lot of evidence to demonstrate how fragile Earth really is. However, fear not! There are plenty of incredible and inspiring projects that are working towards a more sustainable future, such as Durrell’s plan to rewild our world.
Furthermore, there are lots of minor changes you can make to your lifestyle that will also have a positive impact. Here at SunButter, being the kind and optimistic sort of people that we are, we decided to compile a list of sustainable New Year’s resolutions that we believe will really make a difference.
SunButter’s Sustainable New Year’s Resolutions
Go Chemical-Free
We’ve mentioned this before and we’ll mention it again - unnecessary chemicals are bad for your health and for the planet. Not only do they get absorbed into your bloodstream, but they also get washed off into the surrounding environment. Common chemicals found in household products and cosmetics are partly responsible for coral reef bleaching and loss of biodiversity.
Going chemical-free is a great way to reduce your negative impact on this planet and is easily achievable by purchasing natural plant-based products, such as our reef-safe sunscreen. Nowadays, there are even food, beauty and cleaning product apps that help you check the ingredients to ensure that a product is chemical-free and eco-friendly.
Reduce Plastic-Use
Did you know that there are more than 5 trillion pieces of plastic floating around in our oceans? Or that 100,000 marine creatures a year die from plastic entanglement and these are just the ones found? If you really want to make a difference this year, then reducing your use of plastic is the perfect New Year’s resolution!
You can achieve this pledge simply by carrying around your own water bottle, coffee cup, straw and cutlery. Additionally, think about the products you are buying and whether or not they come in sustainable packaging. More and more companies are using ingenious methods of storing their products to reduce the manufacture of single-use plastics. At SunButter, we package our sunscreen products in tins, so we’re completely plastic-free!

Reduce, Repurpose and Recycle
It’s quite easy for us to blame overflowing landfills and environmental pollution on single-use plastic, but each of us contributes to these problems in other ways. Personal overconsumption and negligent waste disposal are also responsible for the sheer amount of waste we are dumping on our planet.
This year, pledge to make more environmentally-friendly and sustainable choices by reducing what you buy and use, repurposing what you no longer need and recycling what’s left (as much as you can).
#SpreadTheButterFurther
To really make an impact, the SunButter team recommend up-cycling over recycling, to help turn waste management into a closed loop system. Consequently, in the new year, we’ll be starting an upcycling campaign for our SunButter tins, with the idea being that we give them new life! Help us #SpreadTheButterFurther by repurposing your tins into artwork, gift boxes, or even plant pots. Post up your own ideas on Instagram with the hashtag - #SpreadTheButterFurther for a chance to be featured on our Upcycling Page.
Keep an eye out for a more detailed post on this in the future!
Happy Sustainable New Year!
We hope this post inspires you to make some positive resolutions this year. If you’ve got any other great ideas to promote a sustainable 2020, we’d love to see them. Post up on social media with the #SpreadTheButterFurther hashtag.
That’s it from us. Happy New Year from the SunButter team!
